Where to draw the line… that is the question!

Donnerstag, 26. März 2009

Every now and then I get frustrated with myself because I try to draw a line somewhere – this applies to all areas of life – and I always have the feeling it’s a wrong line that I’ve drawn. Do you know that feeling too?

It also has to do with categories and boundaries. Taking this weblog as an example, when I was starting it a few days ago I was not sure which language I should use… should it be English because it’s in the www and my English-speaking friends and relatives can follow my life and my thoughts through this blog? Or should it be in German since it’s my native language and most of the time (not always, though) I can express things better in German? Well, the answer can be found somewhere in between – like always. Boundaries are blurring… maybe they always have… They can’t be clearly drawn, so my weblog is just a good example of this grey area, not really black, not really white…

Speaking of categories, I have also been thinking about categorizing my articles and the links here on my blog. Well, it’s not easy finding the perfect category, for there is no perfect category… so the fact that I put some friends’ homepages and weblogs into the category of “Arts” seemed to be appropriate the moment I created those links and has nothing to do with the assumption that they don’t belong to my friends anymore. ;-) This way one could also think about when to call someone a friend or just an aquaintance? Where do I draw the line there? Soulmates (how many can one have?) - best friends – good friends – friends – people I know – etc.???? Those “friends” on facebook one has, can you really consider them all your friends? And can somebody have 278 friends there and therefore be more popular and cooler than another one? Of course not! All these thoughts come to my mind when I think about categories and boundaries…

So, forgive me, if my categories sometimes don’t seem to be quite right… or if I dare to call somebody a friend I’ve never met in person… But creating categories just makes things easier sometimes (or most of the time?), especially in this fast-moving world… (here one could think about whether the world really moves faster nowadays than 50 years ago… but that is another question…)
